According to a recent report, the combined expenditure of travel and entertainment costs by 29 state governments in Nigeria reached a staggering N2 trillion (approximately $5.3 billion USD) in 2022. Meanwhile, these states also borrowed a significant amount of N533 billion, generated an internal generating revenue (IGR) of N1.92 trillion, and serviced their debt obligations with N658 billion. The report highlights the total recurrent expenditures by state governors, which includes refreshments, sitting allowances, and other related expenses, totaling N1.994 trillion. This substantial financial outlay underscores the significant costs associated with governance in these states.
