Nigeria Reports Rise in Almajiri Number Due to Parents Abandonment of Responsibilities

A growing number of children in Nigeria are being forced into street life as parents abandon their responsibilities, according to a recent report by the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Childrens Education. The rise is attributed to neglect, with many parents leaving their children on the streets while they pursue other livelihoods.

A growing crisis in Nigeria's education sector has seen an alarming increase in the number of Almajiris, children who are abandoned by their parents and forced to fend for themselves on the streets. According to Dr Mohammad Idris, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Childrens Education, this trend is largely attributed to parents abandoning their responsibilities towards their children. The commission reports that this rise in Almajiris is having devastating consequences on the lives of these vulnerable children, highlighting the need for urgent intervention to address the issue. As a result, efforts are being made to provide support and education to these children, with the aim of reintegrating them into mainstream society.
